The Best Paint Jobs of All Time

If you have a pastime, be it a sport, playing an instrument or doing something creative, you’re usually able to appreciate the great skill that is required to perform such activities to the highest level. Playing the guitar looks pretty easy at first but it’s not until you give it a crack that you realise how hard it is.

The same could be said of painting; if you’ve ever tried a do-it-yourself job at home, you probably appreciate the good work a professional does. There is actually a great degree of creativity in house painting, as evidence by some of the amazing paint jobs we’ve seen throughout history. Here, we look at some of the best paint work we’ve seen to date (excluding our own of course!).

The Sistine Chapel

Quite possibly the most famous, well-known interior paint job in history, the Sintine Chapel is located in Vatican City and was painted by an entourage of famous artists including Michelangelo, Botticelli, Perugino and Pinturicchio. Michelangelo’s chapel ceiling takes the cake here – his depiction of Adam and God has to be one of the most iconic paintings in existence. He painted it between 1508 and 1512 and designed his own scaffold to reach the ceiling. Further, the conditions under which Michelangelo painted were quite uncomfortable; he stood to paint (instead of lying on his back as many people have assumed) meaning he had his neck pointed upwards the whole time.

The White House

You know you’ve done a decent paint job when the building is named after its colour. The White House has been the setting of many a movie over the years, and has housed every president over in the US since 1800. Designed by Irishman James Hoban, this humble abode only has the 6 floors and 132 rooms sitting on 18 acres – scarcely enough room to put your feet up really. The house has a two story basement. The Red Room (painted a deep red) serves as one of three parlours on the west wing of the building. That sparkling white painted colour has made this iconic building one of the world’s most famous.

The Taj Mahal

A magnificent and iconic building that truly has to be seen to believed, the Taj Mahal was built in the 17th century. The structure’s exterior was decorated with paint, stone inlays and carvings – religious passages from the Holy Quran appear all over the building. Most of the Taj Mahal is marble, which has been painted in a contrasting colour to give it a unique look and the colours used vary greatly. Incised painting methods were used in various places inside and on the exterior.
