When Do-It-Yourself Paint Jobs Go Horribly Wrong

At Painting Pros, we’re always happy to give people tips on how to maintain their homes and ensure the paint work lasts. Usually, people are able to handle most small paint jobs themselves. This might include anything from repainting the trim in a particular room, redoing the ceiling or working on a new feature wall. While many people are able to complete the work quite competently, there’s always those people that are too ambitious, rush the work and probably should’ve hired a professional house painter.

Painting may seem fairly simple in theory, but it takes a great deal of experience to get it right every time. In this article, we thought we’d take a look at some examples of bad do-it-yourself attempts and why you should err on the side of caution unless you know what you’re doing. Take heed!

To start, we thought we’d present to our readers the classic mistake many people make when choosing to paint a room on their own. Now, spreading the paint evenly on the wall and ceiling is one thing, but it’s quite another to get those corners properly covered – even more so when you’re using different colours for each. It’s important that you cut into the edges and use a quality hand paint brush. Otherwise you can tape one wall off, paint the other and let it dry before going on with the other wall.

This next one is a classic case of a home owner trying something very tricky and probably not getting it completely right. Applying paint in inconsistently like this can look great as a feature wall effect, but in this case they’ve opted to paint the whole room this way – like this is where they went wrong! It’s also patchy, and this red colour seems to clash with the white tiling.

Here’s another example of how dangerous it can be to get overly ambitious when you’re painting an interior. Not sure if this house is in the best shape to begin with (see ceiling damage and floor) but the hideous paint work is certainly what your eyes are drawn too.

We’re not entirely sure what to say about this job; it seems as if the person that painted this has ignored every rule in the book! First off, the colour selection is….strange, to say the least. The painter has chosen a completely arbitrary height for the colour change (slightly about the bottom of the window) and it isn’t even a straight line. Perhaps this was somebody’s practice attempt? We’d like to hear from our readers! Any horror stories to report? Have you had success with DIY paint jobs or do you find it’s better to go with a pro? Obviously it depends on your experience, and most of these examples are the worst of the worst – we’re sure you could do better!
